About the Deliverable
The Experimental-Pilot Artificial Reef Project constitutes the core implementation action of the Eco-Beachtech project, providing an innovative and environmentally friendly solution for coastal protection. This deliverable is implemented by the Municipality of Akamas in collaboration with the Eratosthenes Centre of Excellence and the University of the Aegean, with the aim of reducing wave energy in the Coral Bay area of Cyprus.
Through the deployment of underwater structures 100 meters in length, the project allows for the halting of erosion without the negative impacts of traditional works. The construction integrates 3D printing technology, taking into account the principles of biomimicry for the simultaneous enhancement of the marine ecosystem.
This pilot application is a vital infrastructure project, as the reefs created:
- Dissipate the power of waves before they reach the shore, protecting the beach.
- Function as artificial habitats, attracting marine life and increasing biodiversity.
- Offer the possibility of rearrangement, ensuring adaptability to future changes in sea level.
Consequently, the pilot reef project stands as a benchmark for the application of Nature-based Solutions (NbS), ensuring that coastal protection aligns with environmental upgrading.
