Brief Profile & Role
The Municipality of Akamas is an established local self-government body in the Paphos District, playing a pivotal role in shaping and implementing sustainable development policies at the local level. The Municipality was created in 2024, within the framework of the local government reform, resulting from the merger of the former Municipality of Pegeia with the communities of Kissonerga, Akoursos, Ineia, Kathikas, Pano Arodes, and Kato Arodes. This new administrative entity was further strengthened by the inclusion of additional neighboring communities, forming a unified area with a strong cultural, historical, and environmental identity.
As a competent governing body, the Municipality possesses extensive competencies in administrative organization, the management of local affairs, and the strengthening of participatory democracy. The Municipal Council defines strategic priorities ranging from environmental protection and digital governance to education, social participation, and cultural development. The Municipality's operational structure, reinforced by thematic committees and stable partnerships with civil society actors, allows for the implementation of participatory policies and the effective mobilization of local communities.
The Municipality of Akamas exercises jurisdiction over significant sections of the Natura 2000 network, including the Akamas Peninsula—one of the most ecologically valuable areas in Cyprus, featuring rich endemic flora, protected fauna, and habitats of community interest. The Municipality's multi-year experience in managing protected areas and conservation actions provides significant expertise in complex environmental governance issues.
Simultaneously, the new expanded municipal unit hosts an impressive network of museums and cultural centers:
- The Museum of the Mycenaean Colonisation of Cyprus and the Archaeological Site of Agios Georgios in Pegeia.
- The Turtle Museum in Ineia.
- The Wine Museum and the Akamas Visitors Centre in Kathikas.
- The Geology & Paleontology Centre in Pano Arodes.
