Scientific Research and Equipment Installation in Lemnos

Myrina – Lemnos was the focus of the research for the European project Eco-Beachtech, with the scientific team of the University of the Aegean completing significant fieldwork at the pilot beaches of Keros and Romeikos Gialos.

The operations aimed at recording the existing condition and preparing for the winter season. Specifically, the following were carried out:

• Detailed Mapping: The two pilot beaches were studied thoroughly using modern topographic and hydro-acoustic systems, accurately capturing the morphology of the seabed and the coastline.
• Hydrodynamic Experiment: At Romeikos Gialos, a special, short-term hydrodynamic experiment was executed to better understand the currents and water movement in the area.
• Installation of Wave Gauges: The Department of Oceanography and Marine Biosciences proceeded with the installation of wave gauges on both coasts. This equipment will record wave characteristics throughout the winter season (high-energy period), offering valuable data on the intensity of erosion phenomena.

The collected data will feed the project's geospatial database and contribute to the design of protection measures for the island of Lemnos.
