About the Deliverable
The Studies for Identifying Underwater Sand Deposits form the foundation for implementing artificial beach replenishment, one of the most environmentally friendly coastal protection methods. This deliverable is implemented with the aim of locating suitable sand deposits in the marine areas of Lesvos, Lemnos, and Cyprus, offering an alternative solution to coastal erosion.
Through the use of underwater geophysical surveys and sampling, the study enables the determination of the volume and quality of the deposits. The analysis examines the compatibility of the sediment with the pilot beaches, taking into account environmental parameters to avoid disturbance of the seabed.
These studies serve as a vital planning tool, as the maps produced:
- Identify the areas from which material can be extracted for the reinforcement of eroded beaches.
- Ensure that the replenishment is carried out with material similar to the natural sediment, preserving the ecological balance.
- Reduce the cost of future interventions by providing ready-made solutions for sediment "borrowing."
Consequently, the identification of sand deposits is the necessary prerequisite for the sustainable restoration of coasts, ensuring that beaches remain functional and attractive for tourism and the environment.
